Theme: The Future of Social Studies - What's Next?

Keynote: We are delighted to share that our keynote speakers include:

  • Keynote Address: “Righting a Historic Wrong: Racially Restrictive Property Covenants in Washington State”

Professor Larry Cebula is a professor of history at Eastern Washington University, where he leads the eastern Washington portion of the Racial Covenants Project, a statewide effort to find and remediate all of the racially restrictive property records in Washington. He specializes in public and digital history, including the web project SpokaneHistorical.org, and is the graduate director of the online Masters in History degree. Cebula is the author of Plateau Indians and the Quest for Spiritual Power, 1700-1850 published by the University of Nebraska Press, and is co-author of Nearby History: Exploring the Past Around You. Cebula earned an A.B. from the University of Chicago, an M.A. from Eastern Washington University, and a Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary, where he was the only doctoral candidate to complete the Kobayashi Maru scenario successfully. His wife is cocktail historian Renee Cebula, and together they are working on a book tentatively titled Drinking Washington History. When not doing history, Cebula is exploring the backroads of Washington by bicycle.

  • Keynote Address: “Can social studies rise to meet the moment?: A call for bravery and solidarity to build new worlds and new futures”

Dr. Sarah B. Shear is an Associate Professor of Social Studies and Multicultural Education at the University of Washington-Bothell. Her award-winning scholarship examines settler colonialism in K-12 social studies curriculum, teacher education, popular media, and qualitative research. As a member of the Turtle Island Social Studies Collective, Dr. Shear is committed to collective action to combat oppression in education. She and colleagues are published in several journals including Theory and Research in Social Education, Multicultural Perspectives, Social Studies and the Young Learner, and Qualitative Inquiry. In addition, Dr. Shear co-edited (Re)Imagining Elementary Social Studies: A Controversial Issues Reader (IAP, 2018), Marking the Invisible: Articulating Whiteness in Social Studies Education (IAP, 2020), and Insurgent Social Studies: Scholar-Educators Disrupting Erasure & Marginality (Myers Education Press, 2022). Dr. Shear’s forthcoming book, Settler Social Studies: Tracing Supremacist Ideology Across K-12 State Standards (Routledge), seeks to answer two critical questions plaguing social studies education: How do state-level standards for U.S. history, geography, civics, and economics collectively work to reinforce and sustain white settler supremacy in the United States? And how do we radically change course? When not advocating for better social studies futures, Dr. Shear enjoys hiking with her fur kids, Nico and Odin.

  • Sue Metzler is a history teacher at Mariner High School in the Mukilteo School District. She received the 2023 Gilder Lehrman Teacher of the Year award for Washington State. She was also named the Washington State History Teacher of the Year in 2023.

Conference Theme: In a world grappling with rapid change and unprecedented challenges, the question of "What's next?" reverberates in every corner, including the classrooms where the future generation shapes its understanding of society, history, and citizenship. "The Future of Social Studies - What's Next?" serves as a rallying cry, an invitation to educators, leaders, and thinkers to embark on a collaborative quest to reimagine and revitalize social studies education.

This conference is not merely a passive observation of trends but a catalyst for proactive transformation. We gather not just to witness the horizon, but to chart the course. Through dynamic sessions, insightful discussions, and hands-on activities, we will delve into the pressing questions:

  • What skills and knowledge will equip students to navigate the complexities of the 21st century?

  • How can we leverage technology, pedagogy, and assessment to cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement?

  • How can social studies foster inclusivity and celebrate diverse perspectives in a globalized world?

  • What innovative approaches can bridge the gap between traditional learning and the dynamic social landscape?

"The Future of Social Studies - What's Next?" is not a destination, but an ongoing journey. This conference provides a platform to share inspiring practices, brainstorm bold ideas, and forge collaborative partnerships to build a robust future for social studies education. Join us as we embark on this journey, armed with creativity, curiosity, and unwavering determination to ensure that social studies remains a vital compass for empowered global citizens.
