Calling all History Day Teachers and Judges!
March 2010
Judges Needed for Washington History Day
Washington students get ready to meet judges
Right now, as you read this, hundreds of Washington students are not getting
into trouble.
They are in libraries, researching.
They are in archives, reading.
They are in front of computers, writing.
They are in workshops, building.
They are in labs, editing.
They are in garages, painting.
They are getting ready for History Day.
You can help ensure that their efforts are rewarded, by judging at the
Washington History Day state contest on Saturday, May 1, at Bellevue
College.
Judging is easy. You sign up, you show up, you get trained, you judge, you
decide which projects are best, you eat lunch, you get a thank-you mug, you
leave. It takes about five hours total, and it will be one of the most
inspiring days you have this year.
Signing up is easy, too. Go to our new online registration system and create
an account here: wa.nhd.org/ud/templates/registerLinks.php?cid=1
<http://wshs.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=LQZjKwAuAAEAAAURAAO2Eg> . Sign in
using your new username and password, and register to judge. That's it!
You'll hear from us next month with your assignment.
If you've never judged before, don't worry. We'll make sure you're on a team
with experienced judges. Questions? Comments? Email us at
historyday at wshs.wa.gov -- and thank you!
New History Day Teacher Award - Apply Now!
Walt Crowley Teacher Mentor Award
Information and Guidelines Teachers who attend the National History Day
competition each year consistently describe it as a rich learning
experience. Besides cheering on Washington students and interacting with
other teachers from around the world, teachers attend a variety of workshops
designed to help them enhance their classroom practices. Friendships are
forged, camaraderie flourishes, and teachers return energized to share what
they've learned. In recognition of the motivational aspects of History Day
for educator professional development, HistoryLink.org is pleased to sponsor
the Walt Crowley Teacher Mentor Award. This award will provide funding for a
History Day teacher who has not attended the national contest, but has at
least three years of History Day teaching experience, to attend the 2010
National History Day competition near Washington, D.C. The winner will
attend workshops, observe the contest, and return fortified with new
knowledge and enthusiasm for history education. Criteria: The winner will be
selected by the History Day Advisory Committee from applications received
from interested teachers, History Day Regional Coordinators and professional
peers. The winner does not have to be associated with a winning student
entry to be considered for this award. Eligibility: Educator must be a
History Day teacher in Washington State with at least three years of History
Day coaching experience who has not attended the national contest. The
winner must be available to attend the National History Day contest and
associated professional development workshops, typically held the second or
third week of June. Requirements: Educator selected for this honor will
attend 2010 National History Day contest and associated professional
development workshops. Upon return, the winner will submit a brief report to
the Washington History Day Advisory Committee about what they learned at the
