Nominations open for the 2009 Richard C. Bartlett Environmental
Education Award
The Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award is awarded
annually by the National Environmental Education Foundation to an
outstanding educator who has successfully integrated environmental
education into his or her daily education programs. The award is given
to a 5th-12th grade educator who can serve as an inspiration and model
for others. A $5,000 cash award is provided for the recipient to
continue their work in environmental education. Do you know a teacher
who stands out among the rest? If so, please nominate him/her for the
2009 Richard C. Bartlett Award. Nominations will be accepted through
January 31, 2009. To learn more or submit your nomination visit

In addition to the Bartlett Award, you may also be interested in
learning more about a few other educational programs at the National
Environmental Education Foundation:

Classroom Earth is a new program at NEEF for high school teachers. It
is designed to increase the environmental literacy of high school
students by providing teachers with a website, http://classroomearth.org
<http://classroomearth.org/> , with a searchable Resource Library of
environmental information. Classroom Earth also offers the National High
School Challenge, a grants competition recognizing the innovative ways
teachers include environmental content in their curricula. Environmental
Education Professional Development grants are also available. For a
list of the 2008 winners and their projects visit

Planet Connect, a component of Classroom Earth, offers $1,000 grants to
students who want to improve the environment at their school or in their
community. $500 goes towards implementing an environmental project and
$500 goes towards participating in a local environmental internship.
Applications for the grant are available at http://planet-connect.org
<http://planet-connect.org/> and are due

January 20, 2009. Student grant winners will be announced in February
2009 with the full launch of Planet-Connect.org, an interactive social
networking site for teens interested in the environment. The website
will feature environmental topics of interest to teens, green colleges
and careers, and student-created member profiles.

Finally, National Environmental Education Week is the largest organized
environmental education event in the country. It increases the
educational impact of Earth Day by encouraging a full week of
environmental teaching in classrooms and informal learning environments.
In 2008, EE Week had over 1800 partners, of which over 1100 were K-12
schools. The EE Week website: http://EEWeek.org <http://eeweek.org/>
supports educators' efforts with high-quality resources and interactive
materials. Each year we develop thematic resources, and 2009's theme is
Be Water Wise!, focusing on water conservation and water quality
testing.
