2. Watch the Museum ERUPT! : Sign up now for the Disaster! school
program

Blizzards, avalanches, and volcanoes - no, it's not a blockbuster movie
- it's Fall at the Washington State History Museum! Come shake, rattle,
and roll with characters from Washington history and hear stories of
natural disasters in the Pacific Northwest. From Mount St. Helens to
the avalanche that felled two Great Northern trains, students will
investigate the history of natural catastrophes, using artifacts,
ephemera and photographs to unlock the mysteries of our geologic past.

Tuesday through Friday, October 14-17, 2008, students can visit the
History Museum and speak with actors who will be portraying characters
who experienced natural disasters in Washington State. Through engaging
dramatic monologues and student-generated questions, the Hall of
Washington History will be filled with the excitement of this timely
topic. Free curricular materials and student readings are provided to
help you integrate the museum visit with classroom instruction or a "Dig
Deep" CBA.

3. Back to School Night - a night out for YOU and other educators

Back to School Night is an annual community collaboration between many
of the Puget Sound's museums and other educational organizations.
Educators from all over the area come to see what we have to offer to
enhance their current curricula.

Back to School Night has been held since 2002, and happens each year in
October at one of Tacoma's downtown museums - the Museum of Glass,
Tacoma Art Museum or the Washington State History Museum. 2008's event
will be held on October 1, starting at 5:30 pm, at the Tacoma Art
Museum. Educators of all kinds are invited to visit booths representing
more than 20 organizations that offer educational programming, hear
presentations about that programming, make art and try other hands-on
activities, participate in our raffle to win fabulous prizes, and of
course, enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres!

Attendants will receive bags for collecting goodies, each containing a
full contact list of each participating organization and other useful
information.

5. Lesson Plan Spotlight: "The Time Machine"

*	Why were time zones created?
*	What were the potential consequences of not measuring accurate
time?
*	What role did the building/running of the railroad play in the
invention of time standards?

November 18, 1883 was the "Day of Two Noons," a day on which many
influential railroads resolved 56 different American time standards into
just four standard time zones. This was done so that trains could follow
a set schedule, thus avoiding accidents and arriving at stations at a
set time. This elementary school curriculum examines the importance of
this innovation and the impact of time and the creation of time zones
(or standards) on people in the West.
