2009 NATIONAL ONLINE YOUTH SUMMIT
Up in Arms: Understanding the Second Amendment Debate
The Supreme Court recently struck down the Washington, D.C. gun ban,
holding that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to own
guns. Allow your students to delve deeper into this debate over the
Second Amendment with the National Online Youth Summit's 2009 theme, Up
in Arms: Understanding the Second Amendment Debate

.
Apply
<http://maestro.abanet.org/trk/click?ref=zpqri74vj_3-796dx3a17fx16557&>
by December 1, 2008, to participate in this no-cost, interdisciplinary
program for high school students.
What is NOYS?
The National Online Youth Summit (NOYS) is a national web-based program
that encourages youth to learn about and critically evaluate a timely,
law-related topic through civil online discussion with peers from around
the country. The curriculum, objectives, and goals are adaptable and
allow teachers to create an exemplary project-based learning experience
tailored to their students and relevant learning standards.
During the course of the 2009 Summit, high school students will learn
more about the Second Amendment and the debate surrounding the right to
bear arms through study of:
* historical context;
* national and state gun laws;
* role of pro-gun rights and pro-gun control advocacy groups;
* and guns in American popular culture.
Why should my class participate?
NOYS provides today's youth with an opportunity to engage in vigorous
debate with their peers in a virtual, online community. Students will
complete activities designed to sharpen skills such as critical
thinking, research, civil discussion, writing, analysis, synthesis,
self-direction, and cooperation.
Over the last ten years, more than 4,000 students have participated in
the Summit. Past participants have told us they enjoy the experience of
learning about a topic more in-depth while also debating the issue
online with students in different parts of the country.
How do I apply?
Complete an application form
<http://maestro.abanet.org/trk/click?ref=zpqri74vj_3-796dx3a180x16557&>
