November 6, 2008 AND December 11, 2008
5:00 - 8:00 pm
Husky Union Building (HUB) 200 AB

This workshop will explore Western Civilization through the Black Sea
and Mediterranean regions. Often thought of as different entities, one
East and one West, the area throughout most of history was actually
more connected than is thought today. Beginning in Antiquity and
ending in the present, our speakers will discuss change and continuity
between the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions, and their role as a
crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe.
November 6 Session Speakers
Antiquity in Mythology – James Clauss
Venetian Empire – Steve Pfaff
Ottoman Empire – Resat Kasaba
December 11 Session Speakers
Silk Road – Florian Schwartz
Russian Empire – Elena Campbell
The European Union – Arista Cirtautas
A Master Teacher Certificate in "The Black Sea and Mediterranean" and
six clock hours will be awarded to those who attend both sessions. The
cost is $30 (or $15 for one session) and includes clock hours, dinner,
parking, and materials. Fees are non-refundable. Participants who
complete this 6-hour Master Teacher series will be eligible to apply
for a stipend of up to $250 for preparing a secondary curricular
lesson on the themes of the workshop.
