Day on the Social Studies CBAs
Friday, October 12, Seattle
Following the belief that teachers must and should be the primary driving
force behind school change and reform, Global Source has become involved in
supporting K-12 educators in approaching the Social Studies CBAs. Depending
on how we, as social studies educators, engage in the CBAs, they can be a
force for promoting meaningful professional dialogue, building learning
communities, and fostering positive school change in social studies
education. To help kick off the 07-08 school year, Global Source is
collaborating with Caleb Perkins to offer a CBA day of professional
development for K-12 educators on Friday, October 12, in Seattle:
In the morning of October 12, from 9am-12pm, at the Seattle Labor Temple,
Jon Garfunkel, from Global Source, will facilitate a workshop on approaching
the social studies CBAs. This orientation is for those who are new to the
CBAs or just starting to experiment with them in your schools. You will
learn about the anatomy of a CBA, and explore strategies for adapting and
integrating them within your curriculum. We will identify the discretion
and constraints involved with the CBAs and examine how CBA units of study
can be opportunities to model best practices in social studies education.
Tuition is $35. 3 clock hours will be available. Space is limited to 30.
For more program and registration information, visit the Global Source
website at: http://www.globalsourcenetwork.org/ss_cba.htm
In the afternoon of October 12, from 1-4pm at Experience Music
Project/Science Fiction Museum, Caleb Perkins will provide an update from
OSPI on the Social Studies CBAs, including information on the pilot,
reporting form, and planned refinements to these assessments. Participants
will also have an opportunity to share with one another their experiences in
implementing the CBAs in their school and districts. The afternoon session
is free. Since space is limited to 180, please indicate your interest soon
by emailing Caleb at Caleb.Perkins at k12.wa.us
There will also be sessions on the CBAs the following Saturday at the WSCSS
Fall Conference.
Feel free to contact us with any questions.
