SATURDAY, December 8th. Come commemorate PEARL HARBOR DAY at the
National Archives and take a break from the Christmas rush! There is
plenty of FREE parking and no charge for the lecture series.

Our first presentation is from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM called "The
First Shot Fired at Pearl Harbor - The History of the USS Ward," by
Tracy White, a local historian. The destroyer, USS Ward (DD-139/APD-16)
is known for firing the first shot during the attack on Pearl Harbor but
she had a wide ranging career that includes a world record that still
stands. Join us to learn the history of this great ship, from her
commissioning in 1918 to her loss in 1844.

The second presentation, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, is A Short History
of War Photography from Roger Fenton (1855) to Iraq. Nicolette
Bromberg, Visual Materials Curator at the University of Washington, will
present WAR as seen through the camera lens. An event that shouldn't
be missed!

Last, but not least, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM is a hands-on examination
of US Coast Guard and US Corps of Engineers' records about Japanese
Balloon Bombs on US soil during World War II. At that time more than
ninety thousand balloons containing incendiary devices designed to
explode upon contact with the ground were sent into the Gulf Stream to
float across the Pacific Ocean to American soil. See copies of formerly
classified government documents, as well as maps of sightings and
incidents.

The National Archives is located at 6125 Sand Point Way, NE, in
Seattle. For reservations (recommended, but not required), please call
206-336-5115 or e-mail us at seattle.archives at nara.gov
