Dear PNW teachers,
If you still are not familiar with the Seattle Civil Rights and Labor
History Project, you are missing out on an exciting resource to help
students connect our local and regional history with better-known
national stories such as the Southern civil rights movement or labor
unions in the United States.
One lesson plan we have that is designed especially for middle school
students is a "town meeting" over the issue of segregation in Seattle
schools. Students will be surprised to learn that over 2,000
public-school students boycotted their schools for two days and
attended alternative "freedom schools" instead, which were designed to
make them aware of the causes and problems behind the pervasive
segregation in Seattle schools.
Your students will choose a role to take on, such as a parent in
support of the boycott or a member of the ethnic press corps, and with
our extensive collection of primary and secondary sources, will have
plenty of background information to flesh out their chosen persona.
This is an exciting and interactive lesson that is perfect for keeping
students attending during these "dog days" of May when the sun is
shining and minds are wandering.
