ARCHAEOLOGY IN WASHINGTON
Ruth Kirk and Richard D. Daugherty
(University of Washington Press, April 2007, $40 cloth, $26.95 paperback)

This all-new book brings up to date much of what has been learned about
the state's prehistory and the environments early people experienced. It
presents a sample of sites representing Washington's geographic regions
and touches on historical archaeology including excavations at fur-trade
forts and Whitman mission and at Cathlapotle, a Columbia River village
visited by Lewis and Clark.

The authors portray discoveries including:
--a mastodon butchered by hunters on the Olympic Peninsula 14,000 years ago;
--13,000-year-old Clovis points found in an East Wenatchee apple orchard;
--11,200-year-old "Marmes Man" in the Palouse;
--the 9,000-plus year old "Kennewick Man," found eroded out of a
riverbank at Tri-Cities.

This book is richly illustrated with 150 color photographs showing dig
sites and artifacts, as well as line drawings, maps, and informative
sidebars. It is a valuable resource for teachers of Washington State
history, and recommended for middle and high school libraries.
