Children's Map Competition*
What is it?
Children create maps and submit them for evaluation by a panel of judges.
Each country chooses five winning maps to forward to the competition. These
are judged on an international level with 5-15 winners (no more than one
from a given country). International winning entries are submitted to UNICEF
for consideration as greeting cards.
Objectives:
The aims of the competition are to promote children's
creative representation of the world, to enhance their cartographic
awareness and to make them more conscious of their environment.
Why enter?
Children have much to express about the world in which they live, and the
competition can form the basis of an interesting and educational classroom
experience. The activity also gives students a sense of participation in
something that is not just local or even national; they are participating in
an international activity with children of their own age.
Prizes:
• The winning maps from the United States will be displayed at
the International Cartographic Conference in Moscow, Russia
• 8 to 10 prizes of $50 will be offered to the international winners
Past entries and more information:
http://www.icaci.org/en/competition.html
Rules:
• Maps are to adhere to the 2007 theme of "Many nations, one world"
• Depict the whole world, rather than part of it
• Any student 16 years old or younger may enter a map
• Maximum size is 11 x 17 inches
• Each submission must have the following listed on a label on the back of
the map:
Title
Student's name and age
Teacher's name
School name and address (home address if homeschooled)
Country on a label on the backside of the map.
Judging will be based on:
• A recognizable message
• Cartographic content
• The quality of execution
