How can art reveal history? Join Meredith Essex as she guides teachers
in using the Treaty Trail on-line curriculum materials that she has
developed for the Washington State History Museum's Washington History
Online curricular initiative. These materials target EALR requirements
in art, history, and language arts, and help teachers satisfy the
Classroom-Based Assessments in history.

The objective of Washington Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens' 1855
Treaty Trail campaign was to negotiate treaty agreements with all
Washington Indian tribes in order to establish finite Indian
reservations and to acquire control over a vast territory. Artist Gustav
Sohon accompanied Stevens on this journey. His art includes rare,
firsthand representations of key historic events, as well as portraits
of dozens of tribal leaders who participated in the treaty negotiations.

Learn how to engage your students in a learning process that engenders
critical thinking skills through the analysis of primary and secondary
source readings and the analysis of art as a primary source. Using this
curriculum, Sohon's art becomes a lens for revealing the interaction of
cultures, conflicting objectives, events, and personalities that defined
this period in Northwest history. Lessons introduced include: Cause and
Effect: grades 4-5; The Journey: Middle School, and Points of View: High
School.
