Dear teachers,

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, the Seattle Civil Rights and Labor
History project is featuring Reverend Samuel McKinney's story of Dr. King's
only visit to Seattle. This dramatic interview helps Seattle students link
our local civil rights history with this important man. There is a direct
link to the interview on our homepage: www.civilrights.washington.edu
<http://www.civilrights.washington.edu/> . Also, attached to this email is a
short lesson plan for high school students.

The Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History project is a multi-media web
site that brings the vital history of Seattle's civil rights movements to
life with dozens of video oral histories, hundreds of rare photographs,
documents, movement histories, and personal biographies. This is a free
website sponsored by the University of Washington. We also have ready-made
lesson plans and slide shows to facilitate its use in the classroom. These
lesson plans‹including a "Causes of Conflict" CBA‹are available on our For
Teachers page, accessible through the homepage.

Our work has been receiving a great deal of attention in the local press.
In December, the Seattle PI ran an editorial by the project's director,
Professor James Gregory. Read it here:

On January 2, James Gregory and Ph.D student Trevor Griffey spoke about the
project on KUOW's "Weekday," with Steve Sher. The program is available at:

The project is currently in the midst of a teacher-outreach campaign,
offering free inservices to schools interested in integrating our material
into their curriculum. Contact Teresa Frizell at frizellt at gmail.com , or
