The Artist and the Tycoon
February 1 - October 7, 2006
Looking to energize your students? Would you like help launching into Classroom-Based Assessments? Bring your students to explore the intersection of two different worlds- art and history. The Washington State History Museum's exhibit "The Artist and the Tycoon" details the lives and careers of artist Howard Chandler Christy and Tacoma shipping magnate H.F. Alexander. Each man reached the top of his chosen profession. Their lives intersected when Alexander commissioned Christy to paint portraits of him, his daughter, and his grandson.
As part of an interactive curriculum, students will assume the role of a 1926 Tacoma News Tribune writer reporting on the historic meeting of these two men. Students examine paintings, artifacts, and documents which help to reveal what economic, cultural and historical forces brought Howard Chandler Christy and H.F. Alexander together. Students gather, analyze, and document information and make corresponding interpretations that form the basis of a newspaper article that tells the story behind this historic encounter.
This curriculum includes pre-visit, gallery, and post-visit guiding materials for use in conjunction with "The Artist and the Tycoon" exhibit. These curricular materials are designed as a resource for completing the Washington State Social Studies Classroom-Based Assessment, Dig Deep: Analyze Artifacts at 5th grade. Post-visit learning suggestions also guide research and writing that serves as a springboard for completing this CBA at the middle school and high school levels.

New Coast Salish History Box at the Washington State History Museum
Our newly-created Coast Salish history box allows students to explore Native American studies through exploration of reproduction artifacts, maps, language, videos, and books. Particularly notable is the "wild woman" mask carved by Salish artist, Fred Peters, and authentic weavings by master weaver, Susan (sa'hLa mitSa) Pavel. Extensive curricular support included.
We offer History Boxes, on a rental basis, for $25 a week. Because these boxes contain reproduction artifacts, we cannot mail them. They are available for pickup at the Washington State History Museum. For more information about the History Box program, visit www.washingtonhistory.org/wshm/education/historyboxes.htm or call 253/798-5876.
