*NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION TEACH WORKSHOP: PERFORMING ARTS OF ASIA*

The Jackson School Asia Outreach Centers and Center for Global Studies
proudly present Exploring Asia: Performing Arts of Asia, a series
encompassing articles, workshops, lectures, and concerts.
Performing Arts of Asia have teamed up with The Seattle Times Newspapers In
Education (NIE) program to offer a weekly series of articles looking at
performing arts traditions such as Arab music, Silk Road music and dance,
Qawwali, Javanese puppetry, and Tuvan throat singing. Educators
participating in this free series receive the accompanying curriculum guide
in addition to classroom copies of The Seattle Times each Wednesday.
An educator workshop goes deeper into the series and introduces the
curriculum guide. Laurie Sears, UW Professor of History, will discuss
modern-day puppeteers in Java. Sarah Lin Bhatia, EARC Outreach Coordinator,
will talk about the Silk Roads influence on Chinas music and dance.
Musician Simon Shaheen will introduce and demonstrate how to play the oud,
an instrument featured in the series. To conclude, arts educator Sarah
Loudon will walk workshop participants through the curriculum guide she
wrote for the series.

K-12 Educator Workshop

The EARC is delighted to offer a CBA-themed workshop designed for upper
elementary through high school educators. Workshop presenters Patricia
Burleson, master teacher and Director of Japan Connections, and Lisa
Carlson, Tyee Educational Complex teacher-librarian, will introduce sample
East Asia topics and ideas for adapting them to different CBAs and grade
levels.

*FUELING THE FUTURE: PEACE OR CONFLICT?*
K-12 Educator Workshop

The World Affairs Council (WAC) and East Asia Resource Center (EARC) invite
educators to explore the future of energy consumption with a special focus
on China. This workshop concludes the four-part Fueling the Future workshop
series organized by the WAC. The keynote speaker, David Bachman, Professor
and Associate Director of the Jackson School, will give an overview of
Chinas fast-growing economy and its increasing reliance on energy. Finally
the WAC and the EARC will share new teaching resources including a new
Global Classroom student magazine featuring China, a new CBA Bridging
Document, and related films.

A Jackson School Mosaic Workshop

As part of National Arts Education Month in March, attend Hands on the
World, the 2008 Mosaic workshop, to learn hands-on arts and crafts projects
that can be combined with K-8 social studies and other curriculum to teach
about a wide variety of the worlds cultures! Carri Campbell, the Visual and
Performing Arts Program Manager of the Seattle Public Schools, kicks off the
day-long workshop with a keynote address. The late morning and afternoon are
packed with sessions to get teachers working with their hands and learning
about East Asia, the Middle East, and many other regions of the world.

*TEACHING DIVERSITY AND CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING THROUGH DOCUMENTARY
FILM*
Eighth Annual Documentary Film Workshop

Learn to use documentary film to teach about cultural diversity and
cross-cultural understanding by attending the eighth annual Documentary Film
Workshop organized by the Jackson School Joint Outreach Centers. Designed
for high school, community college, and in-service educators, the workshop
features Jackson School scholars introducing films focusing on issues in
Asia and Canada. The first part of the workshop covers the history of
documentary filmmaking and provides ideas to help students evaluate
documentaries. In the afternoon, the documentary films are screened.

*JAPAN INTENSIVE SUMMER COURSE FOR K-12 EDUCATORS INFORMATIONAL SESSION*
Workshop and Informational Session for K-12 Educators by the EARC
April 29, 2008 ~ 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

This summer, the EARC and UW Japan Studies, in partnership with the UW
College of Education, have teamed up to design the most intensive course on
Japan yet offered by the EARC. For pre- and in-service K-12 educators of
backgrounds in Japan studies, the Japan Intensive Summer Course is a
four-week intensive course that will give educators an outstanding grounding
in Japan studies and in curricular strategies for bringing a study of Japan
into their classrooms.
A workshop and informational session will take place on Tuesday, April 29,
2008. Course instructors will present on contemporary Japan.
