WSCSS Teacher of the Year
2010 Teachers of the Year

Paula Korus, has been teaching at North Central High School in the Spokane School District for the past 20 years and her career has been defined by going, “above and beyond the call of duty.” Through her excitement and enthusiasm, she has “managed to create a classroom environment that is interesting, engaging, and successful.” Paula has distinguished herself therough her work with her AP World History classes. Through her efforts she has achieved some of the highest pass rates in the Spokane School district while still making the classes an, “environment where at times students can actually experience ‘live’ hands on learning.” She is constantly looking for ways to bring the world into the classroom has been highly successful in partnering with many groups throughout Spokane. Beyond the classroom Paula is a published author and enjoys traveling internationally with her family.
Terri Messing has had a highly decorated career at Cedar Heights Junior High. She has encouraged, “students to apply their learning in the community and society at large,” and prepares her student for active citizenship. She has taken students throughout the country and connects with the community to bring in issues of social justice and political activism into her curriculum. She spends many hours volunteering to support her school and her colleagues and, “is a tireless advocate of student learning.” She has won numerous other awards including the 2010 Washington Civic Educator, Kitsap County Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, and is a three time recipient of The Colonial Dames Scholarship.
Both of these teachers continue to work to support the successful social studies education that the WSCSS recognizes as vital to the future of our state and nation. Through their work, the youth of their schools will be highly prepared to take on the active citizenship needed in the twenty first century. They truly exceed the challenge from our recent retreat to, “teach like our future depends on it.”
2009 Recipient

Matt Yarkosky, a social studies teacher at Harrrison Prep in the Clover Park School District, was awarded the 2009 WSCSS Teacher of the Year at the Annual Leadership Retreat in Chelan on March 14. Matt's primary assignment has been middle school but he has influenced social studies at his school at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He was nominated by his principal, Lisa Boyd, who said this about Matt, 'Matt has shown passion and competence with helping students learn important social studies concepts. He brings social studies to life and is deserving of public recognition for his passion in this subject.'
