In the Spirit: Contemporary Northwest Native Arts Exhibit
The Washington State History Museum and the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College present the fifth annual In the Spirit: Contemporary Northwest Native Arts Exhibit, a juried art exhibit showcasing the works of contemporary Native artists. Guests will see how today’s Native art connects traditional artistic heritage and contemporary forms of expression. The featured artwork is selected by a jury comprised of experts in Native American art. Supported by Suquamish Foundation and KUOW.

Perspectives on East Asia for Teachers: Modern China
Weekday afternoons, July 22 - August 20, 2010
PRE- AND IN-SERVICE EDUCATORS, you are invited to join the East Asia Resource Center this summer in Seattle for a 4-week course at the University of Washington that will give you an outstanding grounding in China studies and curricular strategies for bringing China into your classroom. Designed to fuel your interest in China, fill in gaps in your knowledge, and help you enliven your China curriculum, this is a seminar-style course that will provide you with the opportunity to work with Asia specialists and master teachers in a small-group setting. Past participants rated the previous Perspectives course as one of the best professional development experiences of their careers!
BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS:
* Small class size and opportunity to work closely with UW China historian Madeleine Dong, Asian art specialist Melanie King, and curriculum specialist Mary Roberts.
* Final project tailored to your needs
* $250 course fee includes 60 clock hours or 6 credits
* $250 stipend paid to teachers upon completion of the final project
* Free course books
* Out-of-town participants provided with campus housing (limited!)
This course is organized by the UW East Asia Resource Center (EARC) and cosponsored by the EARC, The Confucius Institute of the State of Washington, The UW East Asia Center, and the China Studies Program in the UW Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. Offered in partnership with the UW College of Education.

Bring a blanket and chair for a night at the movies at the third annual outdoor film series at historic Lord Mansion. The program begins with a short commentary on the history and importance of the film. Refreshments will be sold before and during the show. Coffee donated by Batdorf and Bronson. Shown in Coach House in case of rain. The doors open a half hour before the movie. Support by the City of Olympia.
